Don’t Be A Statistic!
When was the last time you visited our office? If it has been longer than six months, we would love to see you! We know that this time of year is busy for many of our patients. With summer right around the corner, the end of school activities, sports, and time with family and friends is most likely taking up all of your free time. As busy as you may be, we want to remind you of the importance of making your oral health a priority. Unfortunately, neglecting your oral health can lead to serious complications now and in the future. In fact, there is one oral health condition that affects approximately half of American adults. You don’t want to be a statistic, do you? Read on to learn more about this common, yet serious condition.
Gum Disease
When you visit our office for a hygiene examination and cleaning, we do more than just clean your teeth and look for cavities. We also check for other issues and conditions, one of which is gum disease. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a common condition that affects the gums surrounding the teeth. It consists of a serious gum infection and inflammation caused by bacterial growth along the gumline and around the base of the tooth. Unfortunately, many adults have this disease and don’t even realize it because the warning signs are not always obvious. When you avoid or postpone routine appointments, we aren’t able to detect the problems early.
Is Treatment Available?
Thankfully, we do offer treatments for gum disease. Our treatment recommendation is always based on the severity of your condition. One treatment we recommend for patients in the beginning stages of gum disease (gingivitis) is scaling and root planing. During this procedure, the accumulated bacteria is removed from beneath the gums. The goal is to prevent the disease from spreading further and affecting the jawbone.
