Did You Know Cavities Don’t Always Hurt?

You may have heard us say this during your appointments, but we want to mention it again: your teeth can feel perfectly fine even when something is wrong. It would make our jobs easier if every cavity sent a polite little warning the moment it started, but unfortunately, teeth aren’t always that considerate. A cavity can start and grow gradually without causing the kind of discomfort that makes you call us.
Why Don’t All Cavities Hurt?
A cavity begins when acids produced by bacteria break down tooth enamel. At first, that process may not cause noticeable symptoms because the outer layer of a tooth doesn’t contain nerves. As decay progresses deeper into the tooth, you may notice sensitivity, discomfort when biting, or a toothache. However, your tooth may not hurt when decay is just starting. In fact, waiting for pain can mean giving that decay time to spread.
Feeling Fine Is Still Good News
We don’t want you to start suspecting every tooth in your mouth. The point is that how your teeth feel is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to your oral health. Regular dental visits give us a chance to spot changes you may not be able to see or feel. We examine your teeth carefully and, when appropriate, use dental X-rays to spot issues that can be hard to detect on a visual exam alone.
Small Problems Can Give Us More Options
Finding a cavity early lets us identify a small concern before it becomes a bigger problem. Knowing what is happening lets us talk with you about what, if anything, needs to be done and choose the best approach for that tooth.
Since 1981, we have cared for generations of families, providing comprehensive care personalized for patients at every stage of life. That long-term perspective is one reason prevention and regular monitoring matter so much to us.
You Know Your Smile
We always want to hear about any changes you notice between dental appointments. Perhaps a tooth has become sensitive to cold or sweet. Maybe food suddenly catches in a particular spot, or you notice roughness when you run your tongue over a certain area. None of those things automatically means you have a cavity, but they are useful details to share with us. If everything feels completely normal, tell us that too. We’re always happy to hear that your smile has been quietly minding its own business.
Don’t Wait for Your Teeth to Complain
One of the best things about preventive dental care is that you don’t need to wait until something hurts to take care of your smile. Keep brushing, flossing, and following the recommendations we have made specifically for you. Then keep up with your regular visits so we can check the things that are harder for you to evaluate at home. Sometimes we will find something that deserves attention. Other times, we can tell you everything looks healthy and send you on your way; we are always happy to do that.
If it’s time for your next appointment, call our office located in Spring Hill, FL. We look forward to seeing you, catching up, and helping you stay ahead of dental concerns before they get your attention.
