Bad Habits That Can Harm Your Oral Health
At Ackley Dental Group, we want our patients to have optimal oral health. We know that some patients are at a higher risk of developing certain conditions, and others may experience a dental emergency from time to time. You might be surprised to learn that certain habits can negatively affect your oral health. While these habits may not currently be causing a problem, eventually you will see an impact on your teeth and your oral health. Habits that you may want to change include the following:
Using Teeth as Tools
This is probably the most common habit that most patients are guilty of from time to time. We want to encourage you to take the time to find the appropriate tool, whether it is a pair of scissors or a bottle opener. Using your teeth as a tool can cause them to chip and crack.
Clenching and Grinding Your Teeth
If we have commented that you clench and grind your teeth, we highly suggest taking our treatment recommendation. This repeated motion can lead to worn, cracked, and broken teeth.
Snacking Throughout the Day
Each time you eat, bacteria are introduced into your mouth and stay on and between your teeth. Over time, these bacteria can lead to decay and cavities. It is best to eat at set mealtimes and avoid grazing on food throughout the day.
Biting Your Nails
A common habit is nail biting, which can damage your front teeth and also introduces harmful bacteria into your mouth that can lead to mouth sores and other illnesses.
If you are located in Spring Hill, FL or the surrounding area and are concerned that any of these habits have already caused damage to your teeth, please call our office to schedule an appointment. We can work together to come up with a dental plan that is right for you and your needs. We look forward to seeing you soon!
